PODIUM CASE STUDY: “THE WEIGHT OF GOLD”

Olympic legend Michael Phelps was frustrated. He had begun to address his own personal mental health challenges but was concerned how many of his Team USA brothers and sisters were also struggling.

Michael partnered with Podium Pictures to produce a feature length documentary detailing the issue. Together we recruited fellow Olympic legends like Shaun White, Bode Miller, Apolo Ohno, Lolo Jones, Sasha Cohen, Gracie Gold, and David Boudia to tell their own stories.

Acquired by HBO and nominated for a Sports Emmy Award, most importantly the film helped lead to significantly better mental health programs for our nation's greatest athletes.

It also led to billions of public-facing media impressions featuring anti-stigma messaging.

PODIUM PICTURES OFFICIALLY NAMED "ENTERTAINMENT TRENDSETTER"

”Podium Picture’s focus on impact-driven projects is raising awareness and, critically, funding for important causes. Most recently, “Weight of Gold” debuted on HBO in July and has since received widespread attention, amassing over 1.5 billion impressions. Narrator Michael Phelps and an array of Olympic standouts — including Shaun White, Bode Miller, Lolo Jones, Sasha Cohen, and Apolo Ohno — openly discussed the pressures of the Games and the subsequent mental health issues many Olympians face as a result. The film is arguably the most high-profile effort yet toward eroding the stigma around mental health in sports.”
